Cardiovasology

Overview

The Cardiovasology Department is dedicated to advancing the integration of basic and clinical medicine, fostering comprehensive interdisciplinary collaboration, and enhancing patient-centered services and clinical competence in cardiology. Our vision is to become a leading center for clinical diagnosis and treatment, education and training, medical innovation, and talent training in cardiology.

Our department, a key institution under the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), is recognized for its leadership in arrhythmia research, innovation in cardiovascular medicine, and excellence in interdisciplinary education. It is a hub for top-tier talent and a model of advanced discipline development in Shanghai, dedicated to excellence in both education and healthcare.

Expert Team

Led by Professor CHEN Yihan, a member of the National Committee of the Chinese Peoples Political Consultative Conference, and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), our department is staffed by a cadre of eminent experts and scholars. Our ranks include CAS academicians, Changjiang Scholars, National Distinguished and Excellent Youth Scholars, recipients of the Chinese Medical Worker Award, and young experts recognized by the National Health Commission. We also count among our number Shanghai leading talents, principal researchers in key disciplines, and members of various professional associations. With a clinical team of 66 doctors and 108 nurses, including 16 senior professionals and 12 PhD advisors, our department exemplifies academic and clinical excellence.

Our department excels in providing a comprehensive array of diagnostic and therapeutic services for heart conditions. We specialize in advanced procedures such as complex coronary intervention, transcatheter aortic valve implantation and complex arrhythmia ablation. Additionally, we perform pacemaker implantation including CRT/ICD, interventional treatment of various congenital heart diseases. Our expertise extends to left atrial appendage occlusion, renal artery ablation, chemical ablation of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, and modern cardiac rehabilitation, ensuring patients receive the most cutting-edge care available.

Innovations & Achievements

Our department actively spearheads and engages in numerous national research endeavors, encompassing projects from the NSFC, the national innovation research program, the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars of China, the National Program on Key Basic Research Projects (973 Program), and the National High-tech R&D Program of China (863 Program). Our teams impactful research has yielded pivotal discoveries,, such as defining glutamatergic neuron-like cellular properties of cardiac pacemaker cells, discovering a new cardiac bioelectric control system, identifying molecular valves that control cardiomyocyte proliferation and regeneration, and developing new drugs targeting major heart diseases. These findings have been acknowledged in prestigious journals like Nature and Science, reflecting our departments dedication to scientific excellence and innovation in cardiology.

Collaborations

We collaborate closely with the Cardiovascular Surgery, Intensive Care, Anesthesiology, Ultrasound, Medical Imaging, and Nuclear Medicine departments to form a distinctive team. This collaboration establishes a comprehensive cardiovascular disease medical center, focusing on emergency management and the diagnosis and treatment of complex and rare cardiovascular conditions.

Education & Research

Our department is entrusted with the education of undergraduate, postgraduate, and international students from esteemed medical universities, including Tongji University School of Medicine, Dalian Medical University, Shanxi Medical University, Nanjing Medical University, and Jinzhou Medical University. We offer PhD and masters degree programs and serve as a mobile postdoctoral station. As one of the first standardized and advanced training bases for resident physicians and cardiologists designated by the National Health Commission and Shanghai Municipal Health Commission, we have trained numerous outstanding talents in cardiology, contributing to the advancement of healthcare on a national and regional scale.
