The ENT( Ear, Nose, and Throat) Department at East Hospital is a member institution of the National Clinical Research Center for Otorhinolaryngology Diseases, a cooperative institution for the national key research and development special project on primary prevention of deafness, a member institution of the Gene Health Specialty Committee of the Shanghai Association for Health Science and Technology, and a key specialized disease construction institution of the Pudong New District Health Commission. In line with our dedication to excellence, we serve as a standardized training base for resident physicians in Shanghai and contribute to the academic landscape as an accredited institution affiliated with Tongji University, offering PhD and master programs.
Expert Team
Equipped with 31 beds and a dedicated team of 39 medical and technical professionals, including 1 senior physician, 7 associate chief physicians, 5 PhDs, and 5 masters, we are committed to delivering high-quality healthcare. Among them, there are 2 PhD tutors and 4 master tutors from Tongji University. Our commitment is evident in handling of over 100,000 outpatient and emergency visits, along with more than 2,000 discharges and over1,600 surgeries each year. Services
At East Hospital, the ENT department comprises seven subspecialties, including Microscopic Otology Surgery, Medical Otology, Rhinology and Skull Base Surgery, Nasal Allergy, Laryngology and Phoniatrics, Head and Neck Surgery, and Sleep and Respiratory Disorders. We offer a comprehensive range of diagnostic and treatment services, such as vestibular function testing, audiometry, sleep respiratory monitoring, endoscopic examination, nasal function and allergic reaction testing, and genetic testing for hearing disorders. Notably, our expertise in areas such as cochlear implantation, vestibular disorders, and functional nasal endoscopic surgery underscores the commitment to delivering specialized care to the patients.
Clinical Specialty
1. Microscopic Otological Surgery: The expertise includes cochlear implantation for adults and children with severe deafness, various types of tympanoplasty for chronic otitis media with cholesteatoma, and skull base surgeries using microscopes and endoscopes. We address conditions such as petrous apex cholesteatoma, facial nerve tumors, schwannomas, jugular foramen tumors, and malignant tumors inside and outside the ear.
2. Medical Otology: We have established a multidisciplinary collaboration (MDT) model, involving neurology, emergency medicine, orthopedics, rehabilitation medicine, and more, to enhance the diagnosis and treatment of vestibular vertigo disorders in Pudong. Our service covers vestibular disorders, Meniere’s disease, vestibular migraine, sudden deafness with vertigo, acute vestibular neuritis, and bilateral vestibular dysfunction, offering a complete and streamlined service for patients.
3. Rhinology and Skull Base Surgery: The specialized functional nasal endoscopic surgery treats diseases of the nasal cavity and sinuses. Collaborating with relevant departments, we perform nasal and orbital surgeries, including endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy, endoscopic orbital decompression, endoscopic tumor removal within the nasal cavity, optic nerve decompression, endoscopic repair of cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea, endoscopic pituitary tumor resection via the sphenoid sinus, and endoscopic removal of olfactory neuroblastoma.
Research
In the realm of research, we are dedicated to discovering and studying new genes related to hearing loss. In the past five years, we have received 4 projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 4 provincial-level projects, 2 municipal-level projects, and 2 talent plan projects. In clinical research, the discovery of the mid-frequency hearing loss pathogenic gene SLC44A4 (published in Human Molecular Genetics, IF 5.985) has won us the second prize in the Scientific and Technological Awards from the Chinese Association of Integrative Medicine. Moreover, we have patented 1 national invention and 9 utility models, and published 30 SCI papers. Additionally, we have undertaken 4 national-level continuing medical education projects and 3 municipal projects, as well as serving as the chief editor and co-author of 2 monographs.
