Overview
The East Hospital Clinical Psychology, guided by leading academic experts in psychiatry, psychosomatic medicine, and psychotherapy in China, serves as the Deputy Director Institution in the Psychosomatic Medicine Branch of the Chinese Medical Association. As the first Class-A Grade-3 comprehensive hospital in Shanghai to establish a specialized ward for clinical psychology, we pioneered the innovative “East Hospital Psychological Counselor Advanced Training Program,” tailored for mental health counselors and therapists.
Expert Team
Presently, the department comprises 23 medical and nursing staff, including over 30 full-time or part-time psychotherapists/counselors. Among them, 5 hold advanced professional titles, and over 10 have pursued further education in countries such as the United States, Germany, and Canada. the team are formed by renowned experts who hold key positions in several national academic organizations.
Services
At East Hospital Clinical Psychology, we offer family and marital therapy, as well as interpersonal relationship psychotherapy. We are specialized in German systematic psychosomatic medicine for the diagnosis and treatment of emotional disorders, anxiety disorders, sleep disorders, various neuroses, and psychological issues in children and adolescents.
We provide individualized one-stop outpatient services encompassing various levels, pioneering a five-tiered consultation system nationwide. This includes medication clinics, counseling clinics, expert clinics, as well as more specialized special needs and precision medicine clinics to meet the needs of patients. Our one-stop service not only offers psychiatric assessment and treatment but also convenient psychological counseling/therapy services, avoiding the disconnect between biological and psychological treatments. For inpatient services, we break traditional barriers between psychiatric/psychological wards and other departments. The wards, shared with the Geriatrics Department, feature spacious, well-lit rooms with warm decorations, emphasizing privacy protection. The treatment team comprises psychiatric physicians, psychotherapists/counselors, nurses, and social workers, forming a comprehensive professional team that cares for 50% of non-local inpatients.
Research
We focus on research in areas such as the etiology and efficacy mechanisms of common psychosomatic illnesses and mental problems of young people, psychological effects, and genetic, psychological, as well as neuroimmune mechanisms of psychotherapeutic efficacy and side effects. We place significant emphasis on the clinical application and translation of research.
Our team have served as chief editors for several national planned textbooks and have led the drafting of national standards, including Clinical Psychology Department Standards and Psychotherapy Standards. We undertake various national research projects, including the National Science and Technology Support Program and those funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. Our team have published over 100 research papers in both domestic and international journals and have received numerous awards at the provincial, ministerial, and municipal levels for scientific and technological progress.
Members of the department have received awards such as the Outstanding Young and Middle-aged Science and Technology Experts by the Ministry of Health, the International Sigmund Freud Award for Psychotherapy, the Lifetime Achievement Award in Psychosomatic Medicine by the Psychosomatic Medicine Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, and the highest honor in Shanghai by the ACWF (the All-China Women’s Federation).
Honors & Commitments
In 2017, we achieved the second position in the academic ranking of psychiatric departments among Shanghai’s leading hospitals. We have been recognized as an advanced institution by the Shanghai Psychological Service Association and are members of the Sino-German Institute of Mental Health at Tongji University School of Medicine. Additionally, in 2018, we were among the inaugural members accredited by the Psychosomatic Medicine Branch of the Chinese Medical Association to the China Psychosomatic Medicine Education Alliance. Furthermore, in 2020, we earned approval as an innovative medical service brand by the Shanghai Health System.
