Overview
The East Hospital Pain Management Department serves as a standardized training base for resident physicians in Shanghai and offers master/PhD degree programs affiliated with Tongji University. With a focus on comprehensive development in medicine, education, and research, we provide outpatient and inpatient diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic pain, offering dedicated pain clinics and wards at both the North and South Campuses.
Expert Team
The expert team consists of 4 PhD Physicians, 2 of whom are PhD tutors.
Led by Director WANG Xiangrui, a prominent figure in pain management, the department benefits from his extensive expertise and leadership roles in various medical associations. Director WANG’s prolific contributions include hosting multiple prestigious projects founded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the National Program on Key Basic Research Project (973 Program). His scholarly endeavors encompass over 300 papers, including 68 SCI papers, along with editing 7 monographs and translations. Recognized with numerous awards, including prizes for scientific and technological progress, Director WANG has been lauded as an Outstanding Role Model in the First National Famous Doctors Summit Forum and the first prize of the Scientific and Technological Award of the Chinese Association of Integrative Medicine. He has earned the distinction of being selected as one of China’s best doctors for 2020-2021.
Services
The clinical work primarily focuses on diagnosing and treating various chronic pain conditions, including musculoskeletal pain (including myofascitis, arthritis, spinal origin pain, fibromyalgia, etc.), neuralgia (including postherpetic neuralgia, trigeminal neuralgia, perineal pain, etc.), headaches, cancer-related pain, and refractory pain conditions.
With a commitment to innovation and excellence, we employ advanced techniques and procedures to address pain conditions effectively.

In 2021 alone, the outpatient clinic received nearly 10,000 visits and performed over 800 surgeries, achieving an impressive improvement rate of 90% and a perfect patient satisfaction rate of 100%.
Research
Characterized by clinical applications of stem cell, our research endeavors focus on the perioperative regulation of organ function with traditional Chinese and Western medicine, the mechanism of chronic pain, clinical research on the diagnosis and treatment of post-herpetic neuralgia, and the treatment of chronic pain through the regulation of intestinal flora.
Over the last five years, we have conducted 4 projects from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, three from provincial and municipal sources, and participated in various talent plans. We successfully completed 10 national and municipal projects, published more than 20 papers indexed in SCI, and stands at the forefront of overall disciplinary strength in Shanghai.
