Overview
The East Hospital Anesthesiology (South Campus) is a pivotal specialty in Pudong New District, serving as a standardized training base for resident physicians in Shanghai and an accredited institution affiliated with Tongji University, offering PhD and master programs. Since the inauguration of the South Campus at the World Expo Site Area in March 2013, followed by nine years of robust growth, both the South and North Campuses have evolved into comprehensive anesthesiology departments equivalent to those of Class-A Grade-3 general hospitals. In recent years, we have nurtured a robust talent pool, promoting comprehensive development in medicine, education, and research.
Furthermore, domestically, we have hosted several prestigious professional academic conferences and provided medical assistance to regions such as Wanzhou in Sichuan, Chuxiong in Yunnan, Suqian, and Lianyungang in Jiangsu. Internationally, we continuously enhance our exchanges and collaborations with esteemed institutions such as Wake Forest University Medical Center and the Trauma Medical Center in the United States, the Berlin Heart Center in Germany, and other renowned medical centers.
Expert Team
Under the guidance of the Chief Physician WANG Yinglin, the department boasts 3 chief physicians, 3 associate chief physicians, 6 attending physicians, 15 resident physicians (including those in standardized training), and 7 anesthesia nursing staff. Over 80% of the team members hold master’s or PhD degrees.
Services
At East Hospital Anesthesiology, we offer services including clinical anesthesia and the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic pain. With 20 operating rooms, 5 interventional operating rooms, and 3 endoscopy center operating rooms, we cater to various surgical procedures.
At present, we provide anesthesia services for a wide range of common specialty surgeries and related treatments, with an annual volume of approximately 10,000 cases in the operating room, including anesthesia for cardiac and major vascular surgeries. Moreover, we perform nearly 20,000 cases of anesthesia outside the operating room, covering painless gastroscopy, painless bronchoscopy, painless abortion, painless childbirth, and special anesthesia for neurosurgery, functional neurosurgery, cardiology, and vascular surgery.
Research
As a provider of PhD and master degree programs in anesthesiology at Tongji University, the two campuses jointly cultivate 3-6 PhD and master students annually. Additionally, we undertake undergraduate teaching and clinical internship guidance for medical schools such as Tongji University School of Medicine and Dalian Medical University. Serving as a national standardized training base for resident physicians, we enroll 25-30 standardized training physicians annually, each assigned a senior title physician as a mentor. Actively engaging in various research projects, including those funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and various research projects in Shanghai, we contribute to the department’s research activities (clinical and basic) and share their outcomes. With dedicated research and teaching secretaries, we continually enhance clinical scientific research in areas such as perioperative pain management, organ protection, ERAS (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery), prevention and treatment of severe anesthesia complications, and integration of traditional Chinese and Western medicine.
