Overview
Established in July 2004, the Blood Transfusion Department at East Hospital has been at the forefront of advancing blood transfusion services in Pudong New District. With nearly 20 years of unwavering dedication, we have evolved into a comprehensive clinical department seamlessly integrating blood supply, education, and cutting-edge research. Spanning an area of 240 square meters, we possess well-defined sections for specimen handling, blood storage, blood issuance, serological laboratory, office, and duty room. At present, operating under the leadership of the hospital’s Clinical Blood Use Management Committee, we comprise a dedicated team of 8 members, with 75% of staff holding intermediate to senior professional titles and 88% of holding a bachelor’s degree or higher.
Services
At East Hospital, the Blood Transfusion Department offers blood compatibility tests such as ABO forward and reverse typing, Rh (D) blood typing, cross-matching, antibody screening, as well as serological experiments related to challenging blood typing, difficult cross-matching, and Coombs’ test.
We adhere to national laws and regulations, overseeing clinical blood use planning, declaration, storage, transfusion efficacy evaluation, and laboratory monitoring of transfusion reactions. Our responsibilities extend to hospital-wide clinical blood use management, providing guidance, training, supervision, and emergency support for various medical tasks. Through active collaboration with clinical departments, we facilitate blood transfusion treatment and promote the use of blood components, ensuring the safety of clinical medical blood use. Annually, we supply nearly 1.6 million milliliters of blood and achieve a component transfusion rate of nearly 100%.

Embracing innovation, we have implemented state-of-the-art blood information management systems and employs advanced blood storage equipment with a 24-hour uninterrupted temperature control system. Equipped with the ORTHOVISION Max fully automatic blood type analyzer, we provide comprehensive support for clinical surgeries, treatments, and emergency blood transfusions throughout the hospital. Moreover, we actively engage in discussions on challenging cases and provide expert consultation on blood transfusion matters, ensuring the scientific and rational use of blood.
In addition to clinical responsibilities, we contribute to education and training by offering clinical transfusion teaching and internship guidance to students majoring in clinical medicine, health inspection, and medical laboratory testing. Furthermore, we actively participate in national clinical laboratory inter-laboratory quality assessment activities, consistently achieving outstanding results. Our relentless pursuit of excellence has not gone unnoticed. From 2017 to 2020, we received an excellent score in the Shanghai blood transfusion quality control inspection, ranking first among all hospitals in the city. Recognized as an advanced collective by the Shanghai Blood Management Center, we are committed to setting the benchmark for excellence in blood transfusion services.
