Overview
The Nephrology Department at East Hospital has been recognized as a key discipline at both the district and hospital levels for three consecutive sessions. Designated as a standardized training base for resident physicians in Shanghai, our department has made remarkable strides in medical care, education, research, and talent training, securing a leading position in nephrology within Shanghai.
Expert Team
Our team comprises 17 dedicated staff members, including 4 with senior professional titles, 4 with associate senior titles, 6 with intermediate titles, and 3 with junior titles. Among our esteemed team are 2 PhD tutors and 4 master tutors. We also have a professor specially appointed under the Shanghai Thousand Talents Plan, a young medical talent recognized by the Shanghai Outstanding Youth Medical Talents program, and 2 talents under the Pudong New District Medical Youth Talent program.
Services & Facilities
The Nephrology Department includes Specialized Nephrology Wards, Hemodialysis Room, Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis Room, Renal Pathology Laboratory, and Specialized Nephrology Clinic. We offer a comprehensive range of services, including specialized outpatient services for peritoneal dialysis, hemodialysis, hyperuricemia, diabetic nephropathy, hypertensive nephropathy, and urinary infection. Our ward is equipped with 37 approved beds, 58 hemodialysis machines, 5 continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) machines, 1 plasma exchange machine, and 3 automated peritoneal dialysis machines.
Innovations & Achievements
We maintain a leading position in Shanghai in several areas, including the clinical diagnosis and treatment of acute kidney injury (AKI), management of chronic kidney disease (CKD), and blood purification therapy. Our department excels in both basic and clinical research on AKI mechanisms and offers advanced therapies and technologies, such as biological therapy for refractory kidney diseases, adjustable sodium sequential dialysis, blood perfusion, high-flux hemodialysis filtration, double-membrane plasma exchange, and automated peritoneal dialysis. Our Blood Purification Specialty has ranked first in Shanghai’s quality control evaluations for five consecutive years, earning high praise from peers. Additionally, our capabilities in renal pathology have significantly enhanced the diagnosis and treatment of complex and critical kidney diseases.
Community Engagement
In the past five years, we have organized and participated in over 120 community free clinics and health education activities, making a substantial positive impact on public health. We have also hosted international academic symposiums on acute and chronic kidney injury, fostering the exchange of treatment experiences and developments with scholars from the United States, Japan, and other regions.
Academic Performance
Our department has published over 80 SCI papers in the past five years, including 6 papers in the prestigious Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (JASN). We have initiated 10 new programs supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and have edited or contributed to 6 specialized nephrology books. Recognized for our teaching excellence, we were among the first to be selected as a teaching demonstration department at Tongji University. One of our members has been honored as an outstanding teaching instructor in Shanghai, and six members have received awards in authorized teaching competitions.
