Overview
Established in 1997 by Professor LIU Zhongmin, the director of the hospital, the Cardiovascular Surgery Department has since become a prominent institution. In 2000, we collaborated with the German Heart Center (Berlin) to create the Sino-German Heart Research Institute. Designated as a key specialty construction institution in Shanghai, we founded the Organ Transplant Center at Tongji University in 2003 and began offering a PhD degree program in surgery, with 2 PhD tutors and over 20 master and PhD students. We also established the inaugural medical mobile postdoctoral station at Tongji University. In 2010, we gained approval as the standardized training base for resident physicians in Shanghai.
Expert Team
Under the leadership of former dean LIU Zhongmin, our department is headed by Professor WAN Feng. Our team is pioneering in operating adult open-heart surgery, heart transplantation, combined cardiopulmonary transplantation, and left heart assist device implantation. We are equipped with advanced operating rooms, auxiliary circulation devices, and a cardiovascular surgery intensive care unit.
Services
Our department focuses on the surgical treatment of heart failure, clinical research on stem cell therapy for heart failure, minimally invasive surgical treatment of coronary heart disease, and artificial heart assist devices. We perform operations such as non-stop coronary artery bypass surgery, one-stop minimally invasive coronary artery bypass surgery, valve replacement and repair surgery, and surgical radiofrequency ablation for atrial fibrillation. We aim to maximize patient benefit through individualized treatment plans. Our improvements in traditional surgery for aortic aneurysms and aortic dissections, with a hybrid approach combining surgical and interventional methods, have effectively reduced complications caused by deep hypothermic circulatory arrest procedures.
The Congenital Heart Disease Surgery Specialty focuses on the surgical correction of newborns with low birth weight, particularly employing small incisions and minimally invasive surgery for the treatment of complex congenital heart diseases.
Social Responsibility
We serve Shanghai and extend our service impact nationwide with a strong sense of social responsibility. Our department has successfully treated patients from the United States, Australia, Japan, Europe, and Southeast Asia. As the earliest institution to engage in charity surgeries for congenital heart diseases, we are supported by funds from the Shanghai Charity Federation, the Red Cross Society, and the Elderly Foundation. We consistently conduct charitable surgeries for economically disadvantaged patients suffering from heart disease nationwide and have performed free heart surgeries for over a thousand impoverished children.
Commitment
Leveraging the platform of a high-level hospital and top-notch equipment, we continue to provide comprehensive services to a wide range of patients with superb medical technology and high-quality nursing services.
