Overview
The Neurosurgery Department is a prestigious training base recognized by the Chinese Medical Doctor Association for Neuroendoscopy Physicians. It is a member institution of the Chinese Pituitary Adenoma Collaboration Group and the Chinese Brain Metastasis Collaboration Group. Our department holds executive positions in the National Neurological Disease Medical Center Brain Glioma MDT Specialist Alliance and the Neurological Intensive Care Specialty Alliance. Additionally, it serves as the Clinical Medical Research Center for Neurological System Diseases in Shanghai and the core institution of the Shanghai Stroke Treatment Center. We are also a training base for postdoctoral, PhD, and master’s students from the Tongji University School of Medicine.
Expert Team & Facilities
Our team consists of 19 neurosurgeons, all holding graduate degrees, supported by two full-time research Principal Investigators (PIs) and two postdoctoral researchers. Our department spans both the north and south campuses, offering 111 open beds, including 16 in the Neuro-Intensive Care Unit (NICU). We are equipped with cutting-edge surgical instruments, such as high-end microscopes, ultra-high-definition neuroendoscopes, and neuro-navigation systems, enabling comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of various neurosurgical diseases.
Clinical Specialty
Minimally Invasive Surgery for Neurotumors
Surgical intervention for neurotumors, including intracranial and spinal tumors, is a cornerstone of our department. Led by Professor ZHONG Chunlong, our chief expert proficient in both traditional microscopic techniques and advanced neuroendoscopic minimally invasive procedures, we excel in precision localization using neuro-navigation technology and the “three-in-one” composite operating room platform. Professor Zhong has received the East Hospital Medical Technology Innovation Award for four consecutive years. Our team annually hosts the East Lujiazui Neuroendoscopy and Pituitary Tumor Forum, a national-level workshop on advancements in neuroendoscopy and pituitary adenoma treatment, and forums on Glioma and Brain Metastasis MDT.
Comprehensive Management of Neurocritical Conditions
Our Neurocritical Care Team focuses on the control and standardized treatment of intracranial pressure in patients with severe traumatic brain injury and cerebral hemorrhage. We have pioneered techniques such as minimally invasive clearance of intracerebral hemorrhage under neuroendoscopy, standard large bone flap decompression, intracranial pressure monitoring, sub-low temperature brain protection, coma awakening, and enteral nutrition therapy. Professor Zhong has led five programs related to traumatic brain injury and neurocritical conditions supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. Our team organizes the national-level East Lujiazui Traumatic Brain Injury and Neurocritical Care Forum annually, advancing the field significantly.
Interventional Treatment of Cerebrovascular Diseases
Cerebrovascular disease is a leading cause of life-threatening conditions. Leveraging our hybrid operating room, the Cerebrovascular Disease Interventional Treatment Team, led by Director ZHAO Kaijun and supported by deputy directors WEI Liang and LI Keqin, has developed a comprehensive system for minimally invasive treatment of cerebrovascular diseases. For high-risk patients with increased intracranial pressure during the acute phase of stroke, our team combines minimally invasive decompression with comprehensive perioperative management, significantly improving rescue operation success rates.
Minimally Invasive Diagnosis and Treatment of Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH)
With an aging population, the incidence of Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH) is increasing. Patients typically present with dementia, unstable gait, and urinary incontinence. Led by associate chief physician ZHANG Yanfei, our NPH Minimal Invasive Diagnosis and Treatment Team collaborates with Neurology, Medical Imaging, and Rehabilitation Medicine departments to form a professional MDT team. Through rigorous preoperative screening, individualized surgical plans, and comprehensive postoperative follow-up, we have established a standardized diagnostic and therapeutic process for NPH, achieving excellent treatment outcomes.
