The Joint and Bone Disease Department is recognized as a Sports Medicine Center and a key specialty within the Pudong New District. Our department is dedicated to providing exceptional care and advancing the field of orthopedics.
Expert Team
Our department boasts a distinguished group of 9 physicians, including 2 chief physicians, 3 associate chief physicians, and 4 attending physicians. With 4 PhDs, 4 master’s degrees, and a bachelor’s degree among our ranks, we are equipped with the academic prowess and clinical expertise to address a wide range of joint and bone conditions. We also take pride in our educational contributions, with 1 PhD tutor and 1 master tutor guiding the next generation of medical professionals.
Services
Our north and south campuses offer a combined 31 beds, serving over 56,000 outpatient visits annually and performing more than 1,200 surgeries, with over 90% classified as high-complexity III or IV level procedures. Our diagnostic and treatment scope encompasses a comprehensive range of conditions, including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gouty arthritis, aseptic necrosis, developmental dysplasia, meniscal and ligament injuries, shoulder pathologies, fractures, bone tumors, and nerve compression syndromes, etc.
Clinical Specialty
We specialize in key surgical procedures such as artificial hip and knee joint replacements, revision surgeries, unicompartmental knee arthroplasty, shoulder and elbow joint replacements, arthroscopic minimally invasive surgeries, limb bone tumor resections, and peripheral nerve decompression surgeries, etc.
Education & Research
In the realm of education, our department is actively involved in medical school teaching, having successfully trained 10 PhD and 25 master’s students. We have been honored with awards such as the Tongji University Teaching Reform Project (2012), the Tongji University Young Teachers Exchange Program to the United States (2013), and the First Prize of the Tongji University Young Teachers Lecture Competition (2012 and 2015).
Our department leads a National Key Research and Development Program by the Ministry of Science and Technology and has been awarded projects from the National Natural Science Foundation of China. We also contribute to various sub-projects and have received research grants from multiple Shanghai-based commissions and bureaus. Our team members have been recognized with the Shanghai Sailing Program (2020) and the Pudong New District Outstanding Young Medical Talent Plan (2014). We have been awarded the First Prize of the Shanghai Rehabilitation Science and Technology Award (2011) and the Third Prize of the Shanghai Medical Science and Technology Achievement Award (2010).
Academic Performance
Our department has made significant strides in research, publishing 30 SCI papers with a total impact factor of 110 in prestigious journals such as Advanced Science, Nature Communication, and Biomaterials. We have authored or edited 6 books and secured 1 invention patent and 15 utility model patents. Our team has completed clinical trials for drugs and artificial joint prostheses and conducted a clinical research project on stem cells in the Bo’ao Lecheng Medical Tourism Pilot Zone in Hainan Province. We are currently engaged in a series of clinical and basic research on stem cell therapy for knee osteoarthritis and are in the process of applying for the National Stem Cell Clinical Research Record.
