Overview

The Thoracic Surgery Department, the first specialized department in Pudong New District dedicated to diagnosing and treating thoracic diseases, was founded by Professor LIU Zhongmin. In recent years, we have rapidly developed, establishing a team of highly qualified professionals with robust technical expertise and advanced equipment, including Intensive Care Units (ICUs).

Services

Our department has three sub-specialties with distinct research focuses:

- Lung cancer and pulmonary diseases

- Esophageal cancer and esophageal diseases

- Thymoma and other mediastinal diseases

Surgical Expertise

We specialize in a range of routine and advanced surgical procedures, including:

1. Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS): VATS, our department’s hallmark, offers minimally invasive treatment for various intrathoracic diseases, reducing patient scarring, pain, trauma, and hospitalization time.

2. Precise Diagnosis and Surgery for Lung Nodules: We perform curative surgeries for lung cancer, minimally invasive treatments for benign tumors, lung segmentectomy, and wedge resection for elderly patients with pulmonary emphysema combined with giant bullae, as well as minimally invasive treatments for pneumothorax and lung bullae.

3. Surgical Treatment of Tracheal Diseases: We offer tracheal stenosis formation surgery and tracheal tumor resection surgery.

4. Surgery for Esophageal Cancer and Other Esophageal Diseases: Our services include curative surgery for esophageal cancer, treatment for esophageal stenosis, surgery for reflux esophagitis, and resection of esophageal diverticula and esophageal leiomyomas.

5. Surgery for Mediastinal Tumors: We perform minimally invasive surgery for mediastinal tumors, thymectomy for myasthenia gravis, repair surgery for traumatic diaphragmatic hernia, repair surgery for hiatal hernia, and resection surgery for giant tumors within the mediastinum.

6. Correction of Chest Deformities: Our procedures include pectus excavatum correction surgery, benign and malignant tumor resection of the chest wall, resection surgery for pleural mesothelioma, chest wall reconstruction surgery, and fibrous pleurotomy for chronic empyema.

7. Diagnosis and Surgery for Complex Chest Diseases: We offer minimally invasive sympathetic nerve ablation for hyperhidrosis. Our team, with rich clinical experience, has successfully treated high-difficulty and high-risk multi-organ diseases, such as heart-lung transplantation and comprehensive surgical treatment for lung cancer combined with coronary artery disease (lung cancer resection and coronary artery bypass grafting), achieving satisfactory therapeutic results and favorable prognosis.

8. Personalized Treatment for Lung Cancer: Based on the pathological characteristics, target gene mutation types, and PD-1/PD-L1 expression levels of lung cancer patients, we develop individualized treatment plans aimed at prolonging patients’ lives and improving their quality of life. 

Achievements & Innovations

Our team is involved in numerous programs supported by the National High-tech R&D Program of China (“863” Program), the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and the Shanghai Municipal Government. We have published over 120 papers in national and international journals and contributed to more than 20 publications as either chief or contributing editors. We have received several awards, including the Shanghai Science and Technology Achievement Award and the Shanghai Medical Science and Technology Award.
