Gastrointestinal and Colorectal Surgery (South Campus)

Overview

The Gastrointestinal and Colorectal Surgery Department (South Campus) excels in gastrointestinal care with a highly skilled team. We manage a high volume of patients with a focus on minimally invasive surgery for tumors and innovative approaches to gastric and anal diseases, enhancing patient outcomes. Strong educational ties with top universities and a robust research portfolio underscore our commitment to medical advancement.

Expert Team

Under the esteemed guidance of Professors FU Chuangang and SONG Chun, and the leadership of Professor JIANG Xiaohua, our departments clinical service capacity and technical proficiency are among the most advanced in China. Our department comprises a dedicated medical team of 9 professionals, including 2 chief physicians and 3 associate chief physicians, with 7 holding PhD degrees.

Services

We manage 41 beds, handle around 15,000 outpatient visits, and treat over 2,000 inpatients annually, performing more than 1,500 surgeries each year. Our primary focus is on the diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal tumors, metabolic weight loss surgery, and anal disease management, with a key emphasis on minimally invasive treatment. We have pioneered neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy combined with laparoscopic minimally invasive surgery for locally advanced gastrointestinal cancer in China, achieving favorable long-term survival outcomes. Tailored and precise treatment plans based on the principles of rapid recovery surgery significantly improve surgical cure rates, reduce recurrence, and enhance postoperative survival rates.

Innovations & Achievements

For early gastric cancer, we advocate precision-functional gastric surgery, introducing innovative procedures such as laparoscopic proximal gastrectomy with cardia reconstruction for proximal gastric cancer, laparoscopic pylorus-preserving gastrectomy for middle gastric segment cancer, and laparoscopic distal gastrectomy with preservation of an ultra-small stomach. We also excel in ultra-low anal preservation for rectal cancer and expanded clearance procedures. These advancements significantly enhance patients quality of life.

Multidisciplinary Approach

In recent years, our department has conducted multidisciplinary collaborative diagnosis and treatment for benign gastrointestinal diseases, including metabolic surgery for obesity and associated metabolic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and sleep apnea, achieving remarkable therapeutic effects. For anal diseases like hemorrhoids and anal fistulas, we employ advanced techniques such as PPH and TST, ensuring satisfactory postoperative outcomes.

Education & Research

We undertake extensive teaching responsibilities, training undergraduate and graduate students, residents, specialized trainees, and visiting physicians. We offer PhD and masters degree programs in collaboration with Tongji University, Nanjing Medical University, and Dalian Medical University. Our faculty includes 1 PhD tutor and 3 masters tutors, currently mentoring over 10 PhD and masters degree candidates. Our research endeavors have resulted in 4 programs supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and multiple projects at the Shanghai and Pudong New District levels. In recent years, we have published over 20 SCI papers, with a cumulative impact factor exceeding 100.
