Overview
In July 2021, the East Hospital Neonatology evolved into an independent specialized unit devoted to ensuring the well-being of expectant mothers and newborns. Stemming from the Obstetrics and Gynecology Departments, which specialize in obstetric development, particularly in preterm birth, Neonatology Department strives to establish a comprehensive neonatal treatment and management system, characterized by integrated perinatal care. Additionally, at Shanghai East Hospital, we handle selected pediatric outpatient and emergency cases.
Expert Team
The Neonatology boasts a highly proficient, technically adept, and well-rounded medical and nursing team comprising 1 chief physician, 1 attending physician, 6 resident physicians – including 1 with a PhD and 7 with master’s degrees – and 10 professional nurses.
Services
Equipped with cutting-edge medical apparatus, including state-of-the-art neonatal conventional/high-frequency ventilators, premium incubators for premature infants, and smart rescue radiology tables, the neonatal wards ensure timely, rational, and effective treatment for critically ill newborns, premature infants, and infants with extremely low birth weight. Furthermore, equipment such as amplitude-integrated electroencephalography (aEEG), near-infrared spectroscopy analyzer (NIRS), and point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is being integrated to enhance diagnostic capabilities. Moreover, the department routinely conducts multidisciplinary consultations for fetal diseases, delivering technical support and ensuring seamless integrated care from prenatal to postnatal periods. We have witnessed numerous successful cases in resuscitating and treating extremely premature/very premature infants and infants with extremely low/very low birth weights and severe birth asphyxia.
Innovations & Achievements
Since the inception on September 8, 2021, the Neonatology wards have effectively implemented advanced techniques, such as mechanical ventilation for critically ill newborns. To minimize complications during the resuscitation of extremely premature/very premature infants, such as barotrauma and peroxidative damage, we utilize invasive ventilators in delivery rooms and operating rooms. This ensures a truly seamless closed-loop transport with the consultation and rescue center for critically ill newborns. A system of co-residency for mothers and infants has been established and optimized, allowing our neonatal doctors to conduct routine rounds for both simultaneously, thereby facilitating early problem identification and treatment.
Commitments
The Neonatology Department is in the process of establishing neonatal health records at East Hospital, focusing on high-risk infants, to ensure standardized outpatient follow-up and early intervention post-discharge. Our medical and nursing staff are committed to providing comprehensive and scientifically informed guidance on newborn feeding and care, as well as promoting accurate parenting concepts. The ultimate objective is to provide sustainable support for home care, health management, disease consultation, and treatment for newborn families.
