Overview
The East Hospital Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) holds a legacy dating back to 1956 when it was established under the leadership of the first director, GU Yushi, a distinguished disciple of the renowned physician YUN Tieqiao from the Qing Dynasty. After years of development, we have been recognized as the TCM model among comprehensive hospitals in Shanghai and have expanded to encompass a range of clinical disciplines, including TCM Internal Medicine, Chinese Acupuncture, TCM Preventive Medicine, and TCM Surgery. Currently, the team comprises 24 physicians, among whom 7 hold senior professional titles, and 5 have earned PhD degrees. Additionally, 2 of the members serve as master tutors at Tongji University.
TCM Internal Medicine
The TCM Internal Medicine seamlessly integrate traditional Chinese medicine with modern medical techniques, such as functional genomics, stem cell therapy, small RNA sequencing, and nanomaterials. The research and clinical focus encompass metabolic diseases, anti-aging TCM therapies, pain disorders, chronic liver diseases, and chronic kidney diseases.
TCM Traumatology
Established during the early days of Shanghai East Hospital, the TCM Traumatology excels in combining traditional and modern medical approaches, internal and external treatments, passive and active interventions，as well as prevention and rehabilitation. We offer comprehensive personalized healthcare plans for various conditions, including acute traumatic injuries, chronic musculoskeletal disorders, and internal injuries including gouty arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis. Proficient in various treatment methods and knowledge of the traditional Chinese osteology and traumatology, Chinese massage, and modern rehabilitation medicine, we are skilled in the comprehensive treatment of common diseases in both orthopedics and internal medicine.
TCM Preventive Medicine
Designated as a key construction institution for preventive medicine in Pudong New District, the TCM Preventive Medicine applies TCM theories to intervene in sub-health conditions and prevent various issues such as insomnia, fatigue, obesity, metabolic syndrome, chronic pelvic inflammatory disease, knee osteoarthritis, breast diseases, menstrual disorders, and menopausal syndrome. We offer year-round TCM services, including herbal medicine, acupuncture, physiotherapy, herbal tea, dietary therapy, acupoint application, seasonal treatments, and herbal plastering.
Chinese Acupuncture
The East Hospital Chinese Acupuncture specializes in using acupuncture and Chinese medicine to treat conditions such as menopausal syndrome, menstrual disorders, and dysmenorrhea. Our unique approaches, like “treating the spleen” for android obesity with metabolic disorders, have become demonstration specialties of traditional treatment in Pudong New District. We embrace the concept of “mainly taking the governor vessel” for cervical spondylosis, lumbar spondylosis, and shoulder periarthritis. We also combine acupuncture and herbal medicine for challenging conditions such as insomnia, depression, post-stroke sequelae, trigeminal neuralgia, facial paralysis, facial spasm, Parkinson’s disease, irritable bowel syndrome and ulcerative colitis. Director CHENG Ling, a recognized prominent TCM practitioner in Pudong New District, continues to pass on the Qin family’s acupuncture techniques.
TCM Surgery
The East Hospital TCM Surgery integrates traditional and modern medical approaches, combines internal and external treatments, and focus on prevention and rehabilitation for diseases such as cervical spondylosis, lumbar disc herniation, osteoarthritis, gouty arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, closed fracture, and dislocations of extremities. We provide individualized prevention and therapy plans, utilizing techniques such as manual reduction, Chinese massage, targeted medication, herbal fumigation, acupoint application, joint cavity injections, and herbal external application. We offer services for common diseases in orthopedics and internal medicine.
Achievements
The TCM Internal Medicine and Chinese Acupuncture have garnered recognition as model disciplines of traditional clinical TCM in Pudong New District; the TCM Fatty Liver Specialty has been included in the Shanghai Specialty of TCM; the specialty of TCM Cerebrovascular Disease and TCM Coronary Heart Disease have been listed as leading specialties; the TCM Gynecological Acupuncture Treatment has be recognized as a TCM specialty; the TCM treatment for abnormal fat metabolism and obesity in children has been listed as a TCM brand in Pudong New District.
Academic Performance
We actively contribute to talent training programs and various research projects, underscoring the commitment to advancing TCM practices and research. We undertake undergraduate and master courses at Tongji University School of Medicine. We have 1 project founded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 7 projects at the municipal and bureau levels, and 16 projects at the district level. We also participate in 13 national, Shanghai, Tongji University, and Pudong New District TCM talent training programs. Moreover, we contribute to numerous national, Shanghai Committee of Science and Technology, and Shanghai Municipal Health Commission projects.
