About EH

The East Hospital Affiliated to Tongji University, also known as the Shanghai East Hospital, founded in 1920, is a Class-A Grade-3 (top level in China) comprehensive hospital integrating medical care, education, and research, and is a national role model institution in ethical and cultural progress.

Facilities and Staff

With three campuses (one under construction), all located in the center area of Pudong New District in Shanghai, our hospital houses 1,780 beds and over 60 clinical and medical laboratory departments. We have 3,674 employees, including 497 with senior professional titles, 103 PhD tutors, and 185 master tutors. There are around 250 senior ranking talents at or above the provincial/ministerial level, including academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Changjiang Scholars, National Distinguished Youth Scholars, National Excellent Youth Scholars, and chairpersons and vice-chairpersons of professional associations.

Rankings and Honors

76th among 1,227 national Grade-3 public hospitals assessed by the National Health Commission of China, rating as A+;

58th in the 2021 Science and Technology Evaluation Metrics ranking and 57th in the five-year Science and Technology Evaluation Metrics ranking, both in the top ten list in Shanghai;

Top 50 in translational research investment and research results;

77th in the Asclepius’ Annual Report on China’s Hospital Competitiveness in 2022.

Our hospital also successfully became a pilot institution for high-quality development of Shanghai public hospitals in 2022 and a demonstration hospital for Party building work of Shanghai public hospitals in 2023.

Clinical Services

Our hospital served nearly 3 million outpatient and emergency visits, with over 100,000 discharges and 80,000 surgeries in 2022. we have signed medical service agreements with more than 60 overseas insurance companies, serving more than 30,000 foreign patients annually. Equipped with hybrid operating rooms with MRI, CT, and DSA, and advanced international medical facilities including PET-MRI, PET-CT, EDGE radiotherapy system and surgical robots, our hospital plays a significant role in providing medical support for major international conferences and events and visits by foreign dignitaries. In addition, we have established the world’s first international emergency medical team certified by the World Health Organization.

Research and Education

Our hospital possesses national scientific and technological innovation bases including: National Key Laboratory for Cardiovascular Diseases; National Stem Cell Translational Resource Bank; Basic Science Center of the National Natural Science Foundation of China; National Base of Introducing Talents of Discipline in Stem Cell and Major Disease; Key Laboratory for Arrhythmia under the Ministry of Education; Frontiers Science Center for Cell Stemness and Fate Editing under the Ministry of Education; Shanghai Stem Cell Clinical Diagnosis and Treatment Engineering Research Center; Shanghai Artificial Heart and Heart Failure Medical Engineering and Technology Research Center; The first batch of Stem Cell Clinical Research Institutions approved by the National Health Commission; National Drug Clinical Trial Institution; National Stem Cell Translational Medical Industry Base in Zhangjiang National Independent Innovation Demonstration Zone.

Our hospital has nearly 20 provincial/ministerial-level key disciplines, including cardiovascular disease discipline and emergency medicine national key clinical specialties. We have been publishing research papers in internationally renowned journals such as Nature, Cell, Science, and JAMA, receiving the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, and approval for multiple international and national invention patents.
